We've Released Three New Joomla 1.6 Videos - Including ACL

It's January 10, 2011. Joomla 1.6 Stable should be released sometime before 11:59pm Hawaiian time today!

In preparation for that, we've put together 3 videos that will provide a great overview of what you'll need to know about administering a Joomla 1.6 site.

  • Part 1 - The Site, Users and Menu Management Menus (9:52)
  • Part 2 - The Articles, Components, Extensions and Help Menus (15:29)
  • Joomla 1.6 Access Control Lists (26:31)
They should give you a good start on your preliminary planning for 1.6

How the web is built - Static html vs the CMS

The folks over at W3Techs.com have released an interesting study on the distribution of web development styles.

A whopping 76% of websites are still not using a popular CMS.  This doesn't necessarily mean that they are static sites... many could be dynamic - using PHP or another tool... but only 24% are using a recognizable content management system like Joomla or WordPress.

OSTraining Offers FREE Classes to Schools

This is a pretty cool!

Here's part of their announcement:

That landmark coincided with the holiday season so we celebrated by giving back: we held a free class for 16 non-profit organizations in Atlanta.

Fast forward almost a year and last week we hit another milestone: 200 live classes!  Those Joomla and Drupal classes were held all across North America and England, from Los Angeles to London and from Vancouver to Miami.

This year's landmark also coincided with the holiday season and so we've decided to give back again, only bigger and better:

jcalpro-tutorialOne of the things we're passionate about is training.  Yes, we're an internet marketing/web design company... but Rod loves to teach.  He's just finished his 115th online training video for OSTraining.com.  The topic of this video was JCalPro - a calendar component for Joomla (view the tutorials).

IFCPP chooses NavigateTomorrow

The International Foundation for Cultural Property Protection chose NavigateTomorrow for two of their most important projects in years.

With all the talk about how non-profits are managing in 2009, the IFCPP decided it was time to act. Two projects - a website re-design to bring added functionality and appeal; and online video courses for their two main tracks of certification.

The Process:

We spent time reviewing the old site, making recommendations for a design change and added functionality. We suggested a user survey to allow the client to really get a feel for how their constituency viewed the site and its appeal. Based on the survey response and input from our team, the IFCPP went from this:

IFCPP Old Site to IFCPP new site

The Solution:

The Content Management System we chose for this site is Joomla! Some of the features of the new site include:

  • Community Builder - a social networking and integrated registration tool.
  • CB Subscriptions - some of the IFCPP content is for members only. In addition, the online video courses are not free. We used cbsubs to facilitate both. Users can purchase the entire course, which includes over 11 hours of videos (sample below), exams (automatically graded) and downloadable pdfs.
  • Community Forum
  • Picture galleries
  • Online store for both hard copies and downloadable resources
  • Customizable rotating front page slide show
  • Customizable member's lists
  • Built in email marketing
  • Online video and podcasting
  • and the list goes on...

The second project was to shoot and produce the 14 main sessions from their 2009 National Conference - this year in Chicago at the Art Institute.

We took a unique approach to this shoot... Instead of just filming to tape (Canon XL2) - we digitized directly to hard drives using Screenflow and 3 Macs. This cut down the editing / production time to days instead of months. We were editing sessions with 4 main tracks - 2 cameras, audio, and slides/powerpoint - directly from the presentation computer - during the next sessions!

The results were pretty impressive. We were able to get the online video course on the website in 3 weeks, (including a week of vacation!). Highly recommend Screenflow for the Mac.

This is a short sample - all editing done directly in Screenflow.
