We've Released Three New Joomla 1.6 Videos - Including ACL

It's January 10, 2011. Joomla 1.6 Stable should be released sometime before 11:59pm Hawaiian time today!

In preparation for that, we've put together 3 videos that will provide a great overview of what you'll need to know about administering a Joomla 1.6 site.

  • Part 1 - The Site, Users and Menu Management Menus (9:52)
  • Part 2 - The Articles, Components, Extensions and Help Menus (15:29)
  • Joomla 1.6 Access Control Lists (26:31)
They should give you a good start on your preliminary planning for 1.6

How the web is built - Static html vs the CMS

The folks over at W3Techs.com have released an interesting study on the distribution of web development styles.

A whopping 76% of websites are still not using a popular CMS.  This doesn't necessarily mean that they are static sites... many could be dynamic - using PHP or another tool... but only 24% are using a recognizable content management system like Joomla or WordPress.

OSTraining Offers FREE Classes to Schools

This is a pretty cool!

Here's part of their announcement:

That landmark coincided with the holiday season so we celebrated by giving back: we held a free class for 16 non-profit organizations in Atlanta.

Fast forward almost a year and last week we hit another milestone: 200 live classes!  Those Joomla and Drupal classes were held all across North America and England, from Los Angeles to London and from Vancouver to Miami.

This year's landmark also coincided with the holiday season and so we've decided to give back again, only bigger and better:

jcalpro-tutorialOne of the things we're passionate about is training.  Yes, we're an internet marketing/web design company... but Rod loves to teach.  He's just finished his 115th online training video for OSTraining.com.  The topic of this video was JCalPro - a calendar component for Joomla (view the tutorials).

Joomla - the CMS of choice for the DougandJonShow.com

One of the newest websites in the NavigateTomorrow.com family is TheDougandJonShow.com.

Doug and Jon are two kind of weird guys who are reaching out to the youth of this generation in a unique way! They are actually great guys, and along with Kara (Jon's wife) create all the content for this great site.

**Warning - its for youth... if you don't have a sense of humor or don't know any teenagers... you may just not get it** (LOL)

thedougandjonshowMany months in the planning, this site incorporates some really great technology including the CMS (Content Management System - #6 on our "6things" list) Joomla!. Here's a list of some of the capabilities/features of this site:
  • mulitple templates (depending on the page you're on - the look and feel changes)
  • multiple video/audio players - tons of flexibility here - including drop down links at the end of a video, full screen, youtube/google embedding with just the click of a button
  • Messages from the 800 number available for listening
  • blogs/articles etc.
  • online polls
  • customization - a ton of it. From scripts that bring blogs and videos to the frontpage template, to the "hanging signs" in content items... there's over 2,000 lines of custom script for this site.
  • Flash bobble heads (thanks to Paul Yuen - 5Q Communications)
  • twitter updates
  • a great section for "girls only"
  • lots of feedback options.

List of Extensions:

  • XCloner
  • Apoll
  • AvReloaded
  • Chronoforms
  • ChronoComments
  • JCE
  • sh404sef
  • swMenuPro
  • Versions
  • CommunityBuilder
  • jTweet
  • UCD
  • mod_php
  • mod_placehere

Developement Highlights:

We did two rounds of user testing for this site. Critical to the success of the site was the navigation. Because its "randomly different", we focused on making sure kids could find the content and make their way around the site. (See Usability Studies blog for a description.) We learned a lot on the first test - and confirmed that the changes we made worked on the second (pretty important).

We spent a week with Doug and Jon (and Kara) on location on two different occasions -- working with them to capture their vision and sense their passion... We were able to help them through some of the tough decisions re: platform, design, usability and functionality.

And... we're not leaving them high and dry! We developed a number of custom videos for them for site management and ongoing site maintenance.

So, check out - thedougandjonshow.com - if you know any kids - point them in the right direction!
